The time finally came to create my own double page spread. We did a lot of research about this so I felt ready to write my article and create my own design.
Here is the final result
All the pictures were taken from my photoshoot, and since I already had a previous mock up for the double page spread it was easy to follow my initial layout and add the content I wrote that I wanted to share in the magazine. I added a personal quote since my article is a list of my top 10 recommendation of must-visit places in Miami, so the quote adds a personal touch and creates a more personal connexion between the writer and the reader.
I used Adobe Illustrator to design my double page spread. While initially I was going to use Canva, I switched to Illustrator because I felt it was going to give me more tools to accommodate all the content necessary. Although it is a complex program with lots of tools, I didn't have problems using the software, although the text organization was very tricky. I was able to overcome that though by formatting the text differently and tweaking the spacing. It was overall a good experience.
I also used Photoshop to retouch and adjust the exposure, brightness and saturation, and crop of some of the pictures. And used Google Docs to write the content of my article which I later copy and paste in the different sections of the double page spread.
I am very happy with the final product. I liked the Helvetica font, since I believe is modern, and legible. I used the Museo font in order to align the design with my magazine branding. The white background color looked very good with the pictures as it makes them pop up. I also tried adding color to the heading, which I actually really liked since it calls attention to the double page spread overall and what is featured in the article. The double page spread looks organized, and has a lot of content while still looking simple and aesthetically pleasing with pictures that support the information shared, adding more dynamism to the design.
I am happy I gave myself a chance to learn and practice another design program, and I am satisfied with the outcome of my double page spread. It fulfill my goals and expectations for a clean, simple and beautiful design that is inviting and follows the branding I developed for caminos magazine.
