This blog post contains my final magazine cover. I am happy with this cover mostly because of the visual and the feeling of it.
This cover was inspired by my magazine cover design sketch, so I tried to refer back to that positive and fun feel as much as possible. The sketch helped me create the cover drafts that were tweaked after some classmates and friends critiques, and guided me to get this result for my final cover design. Compared to the first draft, I made a few changes, but the initial idea and vision remained the same.
Some of the feedback I got from classmates and friends include:
Make the cover photo a little brighter/lighter
Align the articles' text on the right side to the left so the dark space in the middle is covered with copy. This was where I initially placed the puff in the first draft but I believe now it is in a better place and by changing the text alignment I'm making everything look better, more organized and cohesive.
Change the issue date (Spring 2023) from bold to regular to soften it a little.
Edit the cover picture in Photoshop to delete the cloud over the letter "o" in the masthead as it looked like an accent (caminós).
My cover photo was taken during Spring break when my cousin from Los Angeles came to Miami and stayed at the Faena Hotel. While visiting and spending time with her I took my phone and captured this shot inspired by the moment of an exciting and fun vacation together. That's when I felt it was the perfect photo for the cover.
Some platforms that helped me create my cover aside from Canva were Photoshop and Illustrator. I definitely learned amazing things from the Adobe programs throughout the process. I also used BarcodesInc.com which helped me generate the barcode for my covers.
The changes I made in the cover were more geared to the placement of the elements so the overall look feels clean and organized. I feel like my cover has a good amount of content, but it is simple and not chaotic. I also think the colors look very good together, and follow the color palette I initially envisioned. It perfectly conveys that happy, fun idea that I have had for this project since the beginning, and my goals and expectations were aligned with the result I got. Since I took the photo and created my first draft, I felt the concept was going to be strong enough to communicate happy, vibrant Miami vacations, and this was going to make a great impression. I enjoyed the process of making this and designing it, and I am very pleased with the outcome.
