FINAL PHOTOSHOOT

Updated: Mar 30, 2023

In this blog post I'm happy and proud to be sharing the final images selected from my travel magazine photoshoot.

I used my shot list which helped me plan ahead and organize routes of where to go first by areas (cities). It helped me manage my time since I had to cover different places in a short period of time driving from one place to the other. The shot list also helped me stay organized and focused on the idea I had in mind for my magazine, and the shots I needed to take to illustrate what I have envisioned for the project.

The process was simple. To make sure we were on the same page, I spoke to my crew member (my mom) who was going to drive me from one location to the other, to make sure we organize the day and time in advance for the photoshoot. This helped me ensure everyone was on the same page and the shoot ran smoothly. We also checked the weather in advance so we knew Saturday afternoon was going to rain and we prepared in advance to putting the locations that were close for Saturday morning (Sunny Isles, Aventura) and the locations that were a little far (Wynwood and Design District, Hollywood) for Sunday when we will have more time to drive. I didn't have to ask for permissions as pictures were taken in public places, however I did mention to the hostess at Motek restaurant that I was taking a shot for my school project and she was happy to pose as "busy talking by phone".

Throughout the process of this photoshoot, I've found different aspects of it to be easy, and others not precisely. For instance, taking the photos as a whole was pretty easy since I feel I have a good understanding of the use of the different shots and angles. What was not that easy or natural though was finding the good or exact time to take the shot so there were not people in the shot, or passing by, since I want clean images to share in my magazine, so I had to move around, ask for people to move or simply wait.

Taking the pictures was a fun task. My photoshoot went as planned in general and I'm happy with the results. Most of the shots I needed were taken with no issue. And I added new shots that were captured inspired by "the moment".

Here are the photos I chose:

I took almost all of the photos in my shot list except there were some variations (change of perspective, angle, lighting, decoration, layout - portrait/landscape). Afterwards, I edited some of the shots (mostly, brightness, exposure, saturation or cropping) to be more fitting for my magazine directly in my iPhone.

One of the issues I faced was that when I went to photograph the mall early Saturday morning (because I wanted to avoid the crowd and get a clean picture), I didn't realized that the sun was going to be facing in the direction where I wanted to take the picture and therefore the lighting was not great and picture was dark. Then, I decided to change the perspective completely, literally 180º, and was able to get a really cool shot of the mall from the opposite direction showing the art and architecture of the mall, and a nice path to it, which ended up going well with the name of my magazine, Caminos.

The photoshoot in Sunny Isles was better than expected. Initially I had planned to only take a picture of the lifeguard house and went to the Newport Fishing Pier early in the morning. The day was beautiful! and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. The colors were gorgeous! and I thought I had to capture it, and I did. I walked down the pier and there was this man doing paddle board crossing below the pier and the picture came out great so I had to add it to my list. It is such a simple image but represents to me "fun, adventurous Miami". There were also so many pelicans, and they were very friendly but shy! You can get really close and they do not move but just look to the other side. It's very cute. I set my camera phone in portrait mode to take the shot as I wanted to make the pelican the focus of the image, but still show the buildings in the back at the shore.

Since I had also made a preview of the layout for my DPS, and knew what I was going to write about, I made sure that the extra shots taken, had a space to be featured in my work.

The picture I believe will look best for my cover is the picture I took at the Faena Hotel. It represents the hip and vibrant atmosphere of Miami that will attract readers who are interested in visiting, and looking for a place to stay for a memorable and fun travel experience.

Overall I'm very happy with my final selection of pictures because I believe it will help me support the content I will be sharing as well as represent Miami as a fun place to eat, play and stay when traveling. The images are clean, simple and just beautiful, inviting us to learn more about Miami as a destination.
