Masthead Typography Research

This blog post will cover the importance of fonts and mastheads in a magazine. A masthead is also known as the title of a magazine. The masthead is often what catches the eye of the general public, and it is the largest text on the cover. It is important for a magazine's masthead to be recognizable because it the first thing the reader looks at. The font play a big role in the representation of the magazine style. The masthead can be changed its color to be more noticeable in the cover (to contrast with the background) and pop out even more. People say don't judge a book by its cover, however the title is way attracts people to choose that magazine to read.

Example #1

The font in this masthead is a serif font in bold. This serif font style looks modern and adds a playful touch to it. The masthead is yellow which really pops out, compliments the rest of the colors of the background photography and adds brightness to the whole cover. Yellow is a color associated with the sun. It symbolizes optimism, energy, joy, happiness and friendship which are perfect attributes that go well with a Travel magazine, making you focus on the invitation to get lost in your adventure. The masthead is big enough to cover the top third of the cover. The color, size and position make the masthead very noticeable.

Example #2

The font in the Outdoor Travel magazine masthead is big and a sans serif font. It is simple, neat and clean. In this cover the masthead is white and it pops out over the blue sky in the background photo. The white color also relates perfectly to the winter season and the snow. It represents a positive personality, and an optimistic outlook toward the future and life in general. I like how the colors in the cover function together and relate to each other opening space for the masthead to stand out.

Experimenting with Fonts

If I have to chose a serif font for my masthead I believe I would most likely use Museo in bold since I think it has more of a simple yet modern look with a twist. I will use the bold version so it will pop and stand out more, which is what I would like for my magazine cover.

As my choice for a san serif font I would like to use for my masthead Trebuchet MS because it is simple, and I want a simplistic yet bright cover. I will also use this font in bold. Maybe if I used it with another color it could match the aesthetic I have in mind.

TOP FIVE

These are the ones I selected that I liked the most since they are all in the style I want for my masthead design. I think that I will use Museo or Trebuchet MS in bold for my masthead since I think it fits my vision the best, and I'll use Helvetica or Gotham for smaller texts and since I believe they will all look good all together.
